How to plan a Eco Honeymoon in Costa Rica or Nicaragua?

During the holidays, many young couples start to plan their honeymoons.  Here are some tips if you are interested in a “green” or “eco” honeymoon to Costa Rica or Nicaragua.

The Cayuga Collection of Sustainable Luxury Hotels and Lodges are very popular with honeymooners.   Every year, especially between May and November, we receive hundreds of newlywed couples that start their marriage in one of our sustainable resorts or eco lodges.   We love having them as our guests because they chose our hotels and lodges because they wanted much more than sipping cocktails with paper umbrellas by the pool in a 5 Star resort.   They were looking for an experience that allows them to connect with their destination and leave a positive impact behind. Here some tips for planning not only a sustainable or eco honeymoon, but also to make sure you get the most out of your honeymoon.

Don’t move around too much:   Costa Rica might seem like a small country, but it is mountainous in its center and the roads are not always in top condition.   This is especially true for the green season months from May through November.   We recommend a combination of beach and a stay in the Central Highlands.   A sample honeymoon itinerary can be found here.

Find that perfect balance between luxury and sustainability:   You want to stay at the nicest hotels possible.   After all it is your honeymoon.   To stretch your dollars, look into green season promotions available between April and December.   But also make sure that you stay in hotels that care about the local community and help to protect the natural beauty of the country.   Some green travel tips can be found here that help you to plan a guilt free honeymoon.

Don’t plan too much:    Many of our honeymoon guests arrive totally exhausted at our hotels and lodges.   Planning a wedding, getting married and then traveling to Costa Rica is exhausting.   So make sure you take a few days to relax and take advantage of the spa services that are offered.   Plan time to do nothing and just ” hang”.   Don’t overdo it.   The biggest mistake we see honeymooners do is to arrive late at night and then have a 6 am wake up call to go rafting the next morning.   Not a good idea.   Relax.   You are on vacation.

Spend some time exploring the local community:   You will find the rooms and facilities at the Cayuga Collection Hotels and Lodges to be very comfortable.   But make an effort to leave the premises and explore. Have a meal at a local restaurant, buy some things at a local store, sit on a bench and observe the locals at what they are doing.   Connect.   Be a part of the experience.   If you need help, our staff will be happy to help you set things up for you.
