During the green season, we invite travel agents for so called “Fam” Trips. (Fam stands for Familiarization). Here is a great report from one of those agents back to his peers at Costa Rica Vacations. Thanks Aaron for such a great review.
Lapa Rios was one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had in Costa Rica. Here are the details:
Getting there: Flying down on Sansa to Puerto Jimenez is a fun way to start. When we arrived at the airstrip a Lapa Rios representative met us with a welcome drink and cookies before hopping in their brand new Toyota Prado SUV’s. They change them every year so your clients will have a luxury start to the Lapa Rios experience. The 30 minute drive to get there was scenic and and we even got to cross a few small creeks to give us the feeling we were really heading into the heart of the jungle.
Arriving: The Main Lodge area has an amazing view of rain forest and the ocean. There is also a really cool wood spiral staircase to another observation deck with great views
Pool Area: The pool area has fantastic views of to different beaches from each side. They are just finishing up a new deck and bar area that will service the pool. It will also have stellar views
Wildlife: I have never seen as much wildlife in Costa Rica as I did walking the trails at Lapa Rios. Sloths, Macaws, Toucans, All four tico Monkey Species, Pizote, Agoutis, frogs, etc etc
Beach: It is about a 10 minute walk down the the closest beach. I walked it Saturday morning and I was literally the only person there so you really feel like you are off the grid. Beach is a big rocky but very beautiful.
No A/C? No Big deal: Since the rooms are up on a ridge there is always a nice breeze coming through the rooms. The rooms do not have walls but rather a mesh material to let the wind and sounds of the rainforest. You hear howler monkeys, macaws and the other sounds of the rainforest all day and night. The are also two ceiling fans that keep the air circulating. One night it rained so it cooled down so much we actually used the blanket to sleep.
Rooms: Outdoor shower was spot on with a view of the ocean with a huge outdoor patio with chairs and small table. Beds and linens were high quality. Bathrooms were very nice. Hot water got very hot.
Service: EVERYONE on the staff at Lapa Rios gave us exceptional service. They never said no to any request
Tours: The included tours are fantastic. The naturalist guides spot everything and did a great job explaining everything.
POINT OF CAUTION: STAIRS!!!! Now this is going to be the one big thing you need to mention to your clients. The rooms with the best views are the furthest down from the lodge/restaurant area. There are literally 200 stairs to go up to get a meal. If you have a client that is either too tired at the end of the day or just feeling a little lazy they will send the Toyota Prado to pick you up and drop you off back at the room.
FOOD: Saving the BEST for last: The food was some of the best I have had at any hotel in Costa Rica. Breakfasts, lunches and dinner were all prepared to perfection. While there is only one restaurant please explain to your clients that every night they have a different theme. Our first night was “Tico Night” so they had tico fusion combinations and even some live marimba music. The second night was a “Dock to Table” with fresh fish caught that morning with a ceviche station where clients learn to make their own fresh ceviche. Your foodie clients should love it – one person at another table demanded recipes since she was so impressed with the flavors. Lastly they had a ton of Vegan and Gluten free options.
Go ahead and sell this partner with confidence. It is an amazing luxury eco-lodge experience and I know your clients looking for that will love it. Good luck!
